Bharti Airtel plans to construct five data centers in Africa under the Nxtra brand. Nxtra Data Centers is one of the largest operators of data centers in India but has yet to expand internationally. Last year, Carlyle acquired a 24 percent stake in Nxtra for $325 million, creating a joint venture between Airtel and Carlyle.

Airtel, the parent company of Nxtra, has a presence in 14 African countries and is one of the continent's largest service providers. Vani Venkatesh, the CEO of Airtel Global Business, stated that they already have forty Edge data centers in Africa, which they use exclusively. In addition, they have invested in two African submarine cables, 2Africa and Equiano. As these cables arrive, five hyperscale data centers are being constructed in Africa.

Nxtra runs 12 data centers and 120 Edge facilities or Points of Presence in India.
