Indian telecommunication company Bharti Airtel has revealed its plans for expanding the data center portfolio of its subsidiary Nxtra. Bharti Airtel announced that it would triple Nxtra’s data center capacity by 2025 to 400MW+. According to the company, Nxtra currently operates 120 Edge and ten core data centers across India. The telco says it plans to invest Rs 5,000 crores ($673 million) in expanding its subsidiary’s data center portfolio across the country. The expansion will also see Nxtra build new data center parks across major metro cities.
According to reports, Nxtra is looking to source 50 percent of its power needs from renewable sources. It has also commissioned solar plants in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. It also says there are more solar plants on the way. Earlier in July, the Economic Times of India reported that Airtel would invest up to $470 million in developing data centers. The CEO and Director of Airtel Business, Ajay Chitkara, said the company had built the most extensive data center network in the country, and it is in the process of expanding its footprint further. He further added that the company has enough experience in operating secure data centers, leading to customers trusting them.
