The proposed $100 million data center by Roundhouse Digital Infrastructure in Cascade Locks, Oregon, was slated for development on land leased from the Port of Cascade Locks. The initial plan involved a 25-year lease for an existing, vacant industrial building, Flex 6, and an adjacent ten-acre lot. Roundhouse aimed to invest $40 million to develop the first building and a further $60 million for a second facility on the empty ten acres, with the total project ultimately planned to consume up to thirty megawatts of power.
However, this massive power demand significantly impacted the small community's utility infrastructure. Due to substantial local backlash, which included the successful recall of two local officials who approved the deal, the Cascade Locks Port Authority officially canceled the project in July 2023. This outcome stemmed from resident concerns over potentially massive increases in utility rates and doubts about the developer's credibility, making it a notable instance where community resistance successfully halted a major tech development.
