Quantica: Big Sky Campus

Quantica Infrastructure, an EnCap-backed developer formed in 2024 that delivers permitted land, power, and fiber for data centers, is building its flagship Big Sky Campus in Yellowstone County, Montana, roughly three miles south of Broadview and about 30 miles north of Billings.

The 5,100-acre campus sits adjacent to a major NorthWestern Energy substation (fed from Colstrip), interstate highways, and rail. NorthWestern Energy signed a letter of intent in July 2025 to serve the development, likely through its regulated business pending Montana PSC review, and is conducting a transmission study.

The first building is expected to be operational in 2029, with capacity ramping in phases through the early 2030s. Phase 1 emphasizes on-site renewable generation and battery storage alongside grid power from NorthWestern. In May 2026, Quantica filed interconnection applications to fund and build additional on-site generation (renewable, firming gas/geothermal, and storage) to support long-term campus demand and regional grid reliability, stating it will pay for the added capacity rather than passing costs to local ratepayers.

Plans also include hundreds of miles of new fiber-ready underground conduit to connect the campus to additional U.S. markets. The project is led by co-founders Damon Obie (a Montana native) and John Chesser, with Charlie Baker as CFO.
