The NextDC S7 project in Eastern Creek serves as a cornerstone of the "OpenAI for Australia" initiative, establishing a massive hyperscale campus designed for sovereign AI infrastructure. Spanning a 258,000 sqm (2.78 million sq ft) site acquired in 2024, the $7 billion development is engineered as a high-density "AI factory" to host advanced GPU superclusters.
By serving as the initial anchor offtaker, OpenAI utilizes this facility to ensure that mission-critical data for Australian government, defense, and enterprise sectors remains on-shore and compliant with local security frameworks. The site is built for sustainability, featuring closed-loop liquid cooling technology to eliminate ongoing potable water use. Following its "fast-track" approval status, the first phase of the campus is currently projected to be ready for service in the second half of 2027.
