In December 2025, the Lewiston City Council unanimously rejected a proposal by MillCompute LLC to build a $300 million Tier III AI data center within the historic Bates Mill No. 3. Despite the promise of a major downtown investment, all seven councilors voted against the project following intense public backlash. Residents and officials cited concerns over the facility’s massive power and water consumption, the developer's request for a 20-year tax break, and a perceived lack of transparency regarding the project's long-term environmental and economic impact on the community.
