The Woodland Cree First Nation (WCFN) is spearheading a major data center development in Alberta, Canada, in collaboration with Sovereign Digital Infrastructure, an Alberta-based firm. Through their majority-owned company, Mihta Askiy Datacenter, WCFN will acquire a partially completed power plant, its associated land, and equipment.
This project entails repurposing the acquired power plant into a natural gas-powered data center. The site is strategically located, benefiting from proximity to natural gas supplies, reservoirs for carbon capture and storage, fiber optic networks, and water supplies.
The facility will be powered by natural gas, and the WCFN has said that two 200MW Siemens turbines have already been procured. Power generation is anticipated in mid-2027.
