Microsoft DUB05 is the third data centre on Microsoft's original Grange Castle campus in Clondalkin, west Dublin. It sits just south of the connected DUB03 and DUB04 buildings.
Microsoft announced the €170 million ($230 million) expansion in December 2013 and completed it in spring 2014. The single-storey building covers 15,700 m² (169,000 sq ft). It brought the original campus (DUB03 to DUB05) to 54,255 m² (584,000 sq ft) of buildings and total investment to €594 million.
Cooling
Rooftop air handling units cool the data halls with outside air through an air-to-air heat exchanger. The units run in dry mode about 95% of a typical year. An evaporative mode supports them on the hottest days. The building uses no chillers.
Utility
ESB Networks serves the campus from the Kilmahud 110 kV customer substation, built next to DUB03 and switched in during January 2010. EirGrid operates the transmission system. West Dublin's grid is constrained, and later Microsoft buildings at Grange Castle needed on-site gas generation. No behind-the-meter generation serves DUB05.
Backup Power
Fifteen containerised diesel generators with integrated belly tanks back up DUB05, in a generator yard south of the building. Microsoft is trialling hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) as a diesel substitute across DUB03 to DUB05.
Campus
Microsoft has since built DUB06 through DUB15 on a second campus to the east and south within Grange Castle Business Park.
