Microsoft DUB04 is a single-storey data centre joined to the west end of DUB03 on Microsoft's original Grange Castle campus in Clondalkin, west Dublin. DUB05 sits just to the south.
Microsoft announced the $130 million extension in February 2012 and brought it online around the end of 2012. The building covers 112,000 sq ft.
Design
DUB04 brought Microsoft's Gen 4 modular design to Dublin. The single-storey steel-frame structure uses pre-manufactured, recycled metal cladding on a concrete pad foundation. A concrete roof carries the air handling units. Microsoft says the modular approach cut materials, carbon footprint and waste by about half compared with a traditional build. Microsoft fits out the data halls in modular increments as demand grows.
Cooling
Rooftop air handling units cool the data halls with outside air. The 2012 design dropped the DX units, adiabatic cooling and return-air fans used in DUB03. An evaporative mode now supports the air handlers on rare hot days. Microsoft runs the halls at about 75°F, with short excursions to 85°F in hot spells.
Utility
ESB Networks serves the campus from the Kilmahud 110 kV customer substation next to DUB03, switched in during January 2010. EirGrid operates the transmission system. No behind-the-meter generation serves DUB04.
Backup Power
Eleven containerised diesel generators with integrated belly tanks back up DUB04, in a generator yard north of the building.
Campus
Microsoft has since built DUB06 through DUB15 on a second campus to the east and south within Grange Castle Business Park.
