US Air Force Bases in Alaska Eyed for Potential Data Center Development

The US Department of the Air Force (DAF) could develop and operate data centers at three of its sites in Alaska. It has issued a Request for Lease Proposal seeking a private sector partner to advance the data center projects. Part of the Department of Defense now referred to as the Department of War the DAF oversees both the United States Air Force and the United States Space Force.

“This lease opportunity signals a strategic effort by the service to leverage its real estate portfolio for technological advancement while creating new economic opportunities,” the DAF said. “Under the Enhanced Use Lease model, the service leases non-excess property to partners for long-term commercial use. In return, the service receives at least fair market value in cash.”

“By making this land available, we are supporting the growing demands of the AI industry while generating value that directly supports our missions and the readiness of our airmen and guardians."

Twelve land parcels across the three sites have been identified for potential development, with the selected developer expected to handle all aspects of the project, including financing, permitting, construction, and long-term operations, according to the DAF. On April 23, the service will host a virtual industry day to engage potential partners, followed by in-person site visits. These are scheduled for Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on April 28, Clear Space Force Station on April 29, and Eielson Air Force Base on April 30.
