OpenAI Secures Approval For 3.2GW Power Deal For Georgia Data Center

The Georgia Public Service Commission has approved a power supply agreement between Georgia Power and OpenAI for its planned data center in Effingham County. Under the deal, Georgia Power will add 3.2GW of generation capacity, with OpenAI covering the full infrastructure costs. The type of generation has not been disclosed. OpenAI will also provide up to 1GW of flexible demand response, with power deliveries expected to begin between 2028 and 2032.

"Data centers are paying more so families and small businesses can pay less, and our goal with every contract we sign under this framework is to deliver value for them," said Kim Greene, chairman, president and CEO of Georgia Power. "Our customers depend on us for reliable and affordable energy every day, and that is the focus behind every decision we make."

OpenAI’s Project Camelia will be built at the Savannah Gateway Industrial Hub in Effingham County, Georgia. The $30 billion-plus campus will feature four data center buildings totaling 4.4 million sq ft and use closed-loop cooling to conserve water. OpenAI is also developing data centers across the US with partners including Oracle, Crusoe, and Related Digital.
