Samsung SDS has begun construction on the Gumi AI Data Center in Gongdan-dong, Gumi, in South Korea's North Gyeongsang Province. The company held a groundbreaking ceremony on Nov. 2 at the former Samsung Electronics Gumi Plant 1 site, Samsung SDS said. The facility starts with 60MW of power capacity and is designed to expand to 120MW in phases.

Samsung SDS develops, owns and will operate the data center, which is being built on a 46,280-square-meter site. Gumi City approved construction in late August 2026, and Samsung SDS targets completion in late 2028 with operations starting in March 2029. The Korea Herald reports the center will support Samsung affiliates' factory robotics work, including the computing-intensive training needed for precision tasks, and will serve outside customers through the company's own GPU computing services and colocation.
The center will use hybrid cooling, combining liquid cooling for high-density GPU servers with air cooling for lower-heat networking and storage equipment, Data Center Dynamics reported. Samsung SDS said the power infrastructure duplicates key equipment and includes emergency backup systems.
"AI is transforming the way companies work and the competitiveness of industries. For these changes to translate into tangible results, a robust foundation capable of processing vast amounts of data and operating AI stably is required, and the Gumi AI Data Center will fulfill that role," said Lee Jun-hee, president and CEO of Samsung SDS.
The groundbreaking is the first visible result of Samsung Group's plan to invest about 60 trillion won ($44.6 billion) in the Yeongnam region to build a Global Physical AI Innovation Cluster, announced in July 2026, The Elec reported. The project dates to a January 2026 investment approval of 427.3 billion won ($319 million) and a memorandum of understanding with Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gumi City.
Samsung SDS plans to grow its AI data center capacity from 110MW to 230MW in 2029 across its Dongtan, Haenam and Gumi sites, and to more than 800MW by 2031, MK reported. Baxtel counts 132 data centers in South Korea, operated by 50 providers, and lists six Samsung SDS sites, including the Gumi Plant One site where the new campus is under construction.
