OVHcloud has announced that it has begun work on a new data center in Limburg, Germany, the company's second in the area. The facility, which will see an investment of around €100 million ($101m) over the next five years, will offer space for 40,000 servers on more than 6,000 square meters (64,580 sq ft) of floor space. According to the company, the facility will be powered by 100% renewable energy, which will be provided by regional provider Energieversorgung Limburg (EVL). Some of its other green credentials include the company's proprietary water cooling technology, which reportedly only uses one glass of water (92 percent less than the industry standard) for ten hours of server operation), utilizing waste heat from the servers to provide underfloor heating for the nearby offices, and an ecological green roof with plants on the facades and trees on the site.
Commenting about this, Falk Weinreich, OVHcloud general manager, Central Europe, said: "The value creation of companies today is unthinkable without knowledge and information in the form of data. They are the capital of a modern economy and need protected spaces in which they are stored and processed. Our challenge is to ensure that our cloud solutions have the lowest possible carbon footprint and that our data center blends perfectly with the natural environment. In this way, we connect digitization with the real world."
Dr. Marius Hahn, Mayor of Limburg, added: "The construction of the new OVHcloud data center speaks for the advantages of Limburg as a location for the digital economy. We are proud that OVHcloud has once again decided to invest in future technologies at the Limburg site and to set a milestone in terms of sustainable data centers."
