The Keuruu government last week announced that Suomen Energiainsinöörit Technology Oy plans to build a data center on a 40-hectare site on the western side of the Karjola industrial area. The company aims to develop a 200,000 sqm (2,152,782 sq ft) facility on the site, which is currently owned by the city. Further details, including project timelines, haven’t been shared.

Petri Koivula, a member of the board of directors of Suomen Energiainsinöörit Technology Oy, said: "A data center is not just a technological investment – it can also be a climate action. Modern data centers are highly energy efficient, and most international operators use fully renewable electricity. This supports the production of green electricity regionally and promotes climate goals on a practical level."

Janne Teeriaho, Keuruu Mayor, said: "The data center is the largest industrial planning project in Keuruu. When implemented, it will have a significant impact on the city's corporate and property tax revenues. Although data centers are not typically labor-intensive, their construction and ongoing maintenance and support services provide work for local businesses and employees. It is great to have the expertise and resources of Suomen Energiainsinöörit Technology Oy as part of Keuruu's development."
