Merlin Barcelona: Merlin Properties to invest €100m ($118m) in its Barcelona data center

Merlin Properties will be having its first data center facility in Barcelona, Spain. The facility will have a capacity of 24MW. In April, Merlin Properties first announced that it would be developing four data center sites in Portugal and Spain. The announcement stated that the Company would be developing data centers on its land in Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona, and Bilbao. Edged Energy will be Merlin Properties’ partner for the projects.

The first data center facility the Company will be committing to is the one in Barcelona. Merlin will invest up to €100 million ($118m) in the facility. It will be building the facility on a 26,000 square meter (280,000 square feet) plot in the Parc Logístic de la Zona Franca in Barcelona.

Also, the facility will have 23,000 square meters (248,000 square feet) of floor space in four floors and twelve rooms. Merlin will start construction in 2022, and the first phase of 16MW is expected to begin operation after 12 months. Interestingly, the data center will be powered by local renewable energy. It will also use no water, and it promises to have a PUE of 1.15.
