Krolmap Engineering & Solutions plans a 225MW data center campus in Belchite, Zaragoza, that would run largely on self-generated power. The Aragonese engineering firm puts the investmekrolmap.width-358.webpnt at €1.5 billion ($1.68bn) for 25 hectares in the La Legua industrial park, Heraldo de Aragón reported on Oct. 18.

Krolmap would develop and operate the campus, which its design divides into six independent buildings. The firm, based in central Zaragoza, was founded in 2022, according to its Baxtel company page. The reports name no tenant, energy supplier, or financial partner for the project, and DCD reports that the renewable technologies and their capacity have not been published.

Heraldo de Aragón describes the campus as Spain's first data center without a connection to the electricity transmission grid. The newspaper reports the plan pairs the buildings with an on-site energy system of renewables, batteries, and cogeneration sized to cover an electricity-intensive load 24 hours a day. DCD instead describes a self-consumption model that reduces dependence on the grid, and notes the initiative remains in the planning phase, with the final architecture and development timeline unreleased.

Heraldo links the self-consumption approach to a draft state decree that would regulate data centers. Baxtel reported in August that Spain was preparing rules requiring facilities of 1MW or more to match at least 80% of their electricity use with new renewable generation on an hourly basis, with the draft set for fast-track legislation and public consultation.

The Belchite campus runs parallel to a second Krolmap project in Zaragoza province. DCD reported in July that the firm planned a campus of up to 150MW at Villanueva de Gállego on a 20,000 square meter plot, also with on-site generation.

Baxtel tracks 38 data center facilities in Aragon, operated by 11 providers and led by Amazon AWS with nine sites; the largest is Amazon's Villanueva VDG-A at 23MW.

No environmental or planning filing for the Belchite site has appeared publicly. UNITNAVE reports that the project does not yet appear in the official gazettes of Aragón or Zaragoza province, or in a resolution from the Instituto Aragonés de Gestión Ambiental.
