Energy firm Uniper plans to develop a new data centre hub at its Staudinger power plant site in Großkrotzenburg, Hesse, Germany. The project will be built on land previously occupied by a coal-fired power station that is being demolished. The hub will include a battery energy storage system and a new gas-fired power plant, though Uniper has not disclosed the planned data centre capacity.
Uniper plans to build data centres on the former cooling tower site of its Staudinger power plant, with around 4.94 million sq ft (459,000 sqm) allocated for development. The company is still seeking investors and finalising the project scope. Uniper is also exploring data centre opportunities at other power plant sites as part of its €5 billion energy infrastructure investment plan.
Hesse is one of Germany’s largest data centre markets, with 173 facilities in operation, according to DataCenters.com. However, new developments face challenges, including political uncertainty and grid constraints. Stack Infrastructure cancelled a planned project in Babenhausen, while EdgeConneX paused a data centre development near Maintal due to grid connection delays.
