Helios Plans 80-Hectare Data Center Site in Finland

Swedish energy company Helios Nordic Energy Finland Oy is planning a data center project in the Alapitkä area of Lapinlahti, central Finland. The project covers more than 80 hectares near Fingrid’s Alapitkä substation and could support up to 500MW of capacity. The site was previously approved for an 80–100MW data center development.

Lapinlahti is a municipality in Northern Savo, central Finland, around 450km north of Helsinki. Helios has submitted a zoning proposal for the project, which the municipal board is expected to review later this month. Construction could begin next year, alongside a planned solar plant in the area.

Aleksi Aalto, project developer at Helios, said: “There is currently a huge demand for data centers in Europe. In Finland, we have the trump cards to implement safe, high-quality, and reliable data centers. At the same time, this will bring jobs and new opportunities to many locations in Finland. Cooperation in Lapinlahti has been smooth, and we are hopeful about the development of our Alapitkä data center.”

Founded in 2019, Helios Nordic Energy has more than 100 solar projects across the Nordic region and has been owned by VINCI Group since 2024. The company is also planning a data center in Iisalmi, Finland, while the Lapinlahti project could create hundreds of construction jobs and more than 100 permanent positions.
