Virginia data center firm Globalinx this week revealed plans to develop a backup data center in Portsmouth, a city some 20 miles west of its existing Virginia Beach site.

Chris Mitchell, director of sales at Globalinx Datacenters, told the authority the company was building a data center within the city, but didn’t provide further details on capacity or timelines. The company has met with city officials to explore potential sites, and Mitchell said it was exploring using 700 Port Centre Parkway as a data center.

Globalinx currently operates a data center and cable landing campus in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in close proximity to the Telxius Cable Landing Station (CLS). The company originally set about converting an existing warehouse building at 1632 Corporate Landing Parkway into a carrier-neutral colocation facility. The 21.5-acre site is set to be built out in four phases and total 287,000 sq ft (26,665 sqm) and up to 30MW at full build-out.
