Chinese data center developer and operator GDS has bought land in Batam, Indonesia, for the development of a new data center campus. GDS says it is looking to develop two data center buildings on the acquired land. The buildings will have a net floor area of up to 107,600 square feet (10,000 square meters) and 28MW of total IT capacity. The land it acquired is at Nongsa Digital Park, which is part of the country’s Special Economic Zone. The zone has a lot of tax incentives, including exemptions from import duties, value-added tax, and excise duties.

CEO and Chairman of GDS, William Huang, said the company is witnessing an increased demand from its Chinese Internet and cloud customers for hyperscale data center facilities in Southeast Asia. He noted that the company is happy to have secured its presence in Batam. Huang said the company looks forward to solidifying its relationship with the Indonesian government.
