Digital Realty is expanding in Italy with plans to develop a data center campus in Milan. The colocation giant this week announced its entry into the Milan market with the acquisition of two plots in Abbiategrasso, southwest of the city center.

The company plans to develop an initial 8MW facility, with the first phase expected to launch in 2028, and intends to expand on the larger site to support up to 84MW of capacity.

"We’re excited to enter Milan, Italy’s business capital with a dynamic tech ecosystem," said Paula Cogan, managing director, EMEA, Digital Realty. "By expanding into Milan, we are providing much-needed infrastructure to support the city’s growth as a digital hub, fostering new content, interconnection, and cloud communities while assuring long-term capacity for AI and hyperscale deployments."

Digital Realty is also developing its first Italian data center in Rome. After breaking ground last year, the 3MW ROM1 facility is expected to go live in early 2027. First announced in September 2023, the 22-hectare campus could reach 2.3 million sq ft (213,676 sqm) at full build-out, making it one of the country’s largest data center projects.
