New Zealand: DataGrid Files To Develop a 100MW Data Center in New Zealand

According to Stuff.co.nz, DataGrid has filed an application to develop its first data center in southern New Zealand. The company filed the application with Southland District Council for a new facility in Makarewa, outside Invercargill. Plans for the data center in December 2020. The CEO of DataGrid, Remi Galasso, said the plan for the company’s carbon-neutral hyperscale facility is going as planned. He mentioned that it is a significant milestone for the company.
DataGrid partnered with Meridian Energy for the green energy needs of the data center. It will also be the first hyperscale facility in the area. The University of Otago will be the data center’s first anchor tenant. DataGrid acquired the 43-hectare plot in January 2022. The company is looking to develop ten 70,000 square feet (6,500 square meters) modules with 10MW of capacity each. Report has it that the District Council has agreed to the application. However, a decision has not been made.
