U.S. data center operator DataBank has revealed plans to install a 3.1MW rooftop solar array at its HOU3 facility in Houston, Texas. Once completed, the installation is expected to become the largest rooftop solar project in the Houston metropolitan area, producing around 4.5 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually over an anticipated 25-year lifespan. According to the company, the system's levelized cost of energy will match current utility rates, effectively serving as a day-one energy hedge against price volatility.
"This project shows that achieving sustainability goals directly supports strong business performance in a grid-constrained world," said Ethan Eisenberg, director of Energy and Sustainability Management. "By generating renewable energy on site, we're creating a cost-effective path to our net zero commitments while providing immediate value to our stakeholders."
DataBank has selected Wunder Power to design, build, monitor, and maintain the solar array throughout its operational life. The company has also indicated plans to explore additional rooftop solar projects across its broader portfolio. The HOU3 data center is part of DataBank’s Westway Park Campus, located west of downtown Houston. It offers 6.5MW of capacity across 41,860 sq ft (3,888 sqm). According to DataBank, the facility hosts 38 onsite carriers and operates entirely on renewable energy.
