Data Centers Accounted For 23% Of Ireland’s Electricity Consumption In 2025

Data centers in Ireland accounted for 23 percent of the country’s total metered electricity use in 2025. According to the Central Statistics Office, facilities consumed 7,663GWh during the year, a 10 percent increase from 6,973GWh in 2024.

Data centers in Ireland now consume nearly as much electricity as all households combined. Power use by the sector has increased 518 percent since 2015, with more than 80 facilities now operating, mainly around Greater Dublin. Dublin’s data center construction restrictions were lifted seven months ago, replaced by new rules requiring operators to provide on-site generation and source at least 80 percent of annual demand from new unsubsidized renewable energy projects.

Ireland is planning to support data centers co-located with renewable energy infrastructure to improve grid resilience, with future energy parks expected to support hundreds of megawatts of capacity. The country hosts major operators including AWS, Microsoft, Google, Meta, Equinix, Digital Realty, CyrusOne, Vantage, and Echelon. Equinix also began construction on a $92 million Dublin data center in March, expected to open in 2028.CyrusOne_Dublin1_ireland.width-358.webp
