Beijing warning over data center construction

Dec 09, 2021 | Posted by MadalineDunn

In light of the global push to reduce carbon emissions, Beijing outlined in a plan published on Wednesday that local governments in China should ensure that the "blind and disorderly development" of data centers is carefully monitored and prevented. Moreover, it stated that governments should avoid providing incentives, like preferential policies on land and tax, to companies located outside areas selected as national clusters.

Of course, like many other countries, China has pledged to reduce its carbon emissions by 2030, and more broadly, promised to achieve neutrality by 2060; such instructions to local governments is a step towards this. In line with its plan, the PUE of newly constructed large and super-large facilities will be reduced by 1.3%.

In the plan, released by China's top market regulator and three other government agencies, the push for green data centers was also outlined, encouraging the use of renewable energy such as wind and solar.

There are 25 data centers in Beijing.
