A ballistic strike overnight rendered a Datagroup-owned data center in Kyiv, Ukraine, inoperable. The telecoms company said restoring and operating the facility is “impossible.” The wider attack destroyed a shopping and entertainment center and damaged a
medical facility and a 25-story residential building.
The strike killed a 21-year-old woman and injured eight others, according to the Kyiv Post. No Datagroup employees were harmed.
Datagroup said the facility was completely disabled and could not be restored, but services would continue through backup sites. Local journalists reported that Ukraine received no advance warning from the US.
Russia and Ukraine have intensified attacks on each other’s digital infrastructure. Russian drone strikes have hit Ukrainian facilities, including Kyivstar’s headquarters, while Ukraine has targeted Russian infrastructure, including Yandex data centers. Russian officials have proposed protective measures ranging from “doomsday” data centers to facilities in disused coal mines or allied countries such as Belarus and Kazakhstan. The Russia-Ukraine conflict began in 2014 and escalated significantly in 2022.
