Amazon Web Services (AWS) plans to invest a further $5 billion in data centers in South Korea, which will include the construction of new AI data centers in the Incheon and Gyeonggi regions. This investment builds on a previous $4 billion commitment to the country made in June of this year.

President Lee said regarding the agreement: "The South Korean government is actively promoting the construction of an ‘AI highway’ to ensure that AI can be utilized at any time in industrial and research settings, with the goal of becoming one of the top three global AI powers. Amazon’s decision to make a large-scale additional investment in AI data centers will further accelerate the development of South Korea’s AI ecosystem.”

He added: “We expect Amazon to strengthen partnerships with domestic companies and create various cooperation models in the process of advancing its business. The South Korean government will also actively play a bridging role for prosperity, moving toward the future together with global economic actors.”
