It is good news for Amazon Web Services as it has been granted permission to acquire land for its planned data center development in New Zealand. In September last year, the company revealed plans to launch its new Cloud Region in the country in 2024. Consistent with Microsoft’s previous regions, the new Asia Pacific Region will include three Availability Zones. Microsoft also revealed that it would invest up to NZ$7.5 billion (US$5.3 billion) in New Zealand.

New Zealand’s Overseas Investment Office has finally granted Amazon consent to continue with its plans to develop the new region. AWS’s Head in New Zealand, Tiffany Bloomquist, said the approval from the OIO is a vital step completed toward providing state-of-the-art cloud computing services in the country. According to the OIO decision, the region will enable customers buying AWS’s cloud services to choose data centers in the country rather than facilities overseas.
