atNorth has signed a project development agreement with the Swedish energy infrastructure company Calentix covering the SWE04 data center in Långsele, Sweden. Under the agreement, Calentix will develop and finance a system that recovers surplus heat from SWE04 and supplies it to the nearby Långsele district heating network. The first phase is expected to recover 1.6MW, with potential to datacenterdynamics.comFeatured: Exterior photograph of atNorth's Swedish data center facility showing prominent entrance branding and signage.expand to about 20MW, and the companies target a first delivery of heat in the second quarter of 2029, according to Data Center Dynamics.

Calentix leads the project's technical, commercial and financial development, including arranging the financing and infrastructure needed to recover and transport the heat, and takes the role of an independent heat producer between the data center and the district heating operator, w.media reported. atNorth provides access to the surplus heat, together with site integration and the infrastructure interfaces. The Långsele heat network is operated by the Swedish utility Adven.

The two companies said the structure lets "each partner to focus on what they do best, while creating a practical way for the heat to be used within the local energy system." An earlier feasibility study found heat recovery at SWE04 technically feasible and identified local interest in using the heat. The current phase covers technical design, site planning, commercial principles and the agreements needed between the parties.

Connecting the site to the network will require between 2 kilometers and 10 kilometers of new pipelines. SWE04 is planned for a 50-hectare plot at Hamre Industrial Park, about 550 kilometers north of Stockholm, and atNorth announced the campus in February 2026. The company describes the site as up to 300MW, designed for direct liquid cooling and rack densities up to 1MW.

Heat reuse runs through atNorth's Nordic portfolio. Its SWE01 site in Kista supplies surplus heat to Stockholm Exergi's district heating network, a Danish partnership with Vestforbrænding is set to deliver heat to more than 8,000 homes, and recovered heat warms a neighboring Kesko store in Finland. At the DEN02 campus in Denmark, the surplus heat is designated for a greenhouse development by Selected Group. Equinix and CPP Investments completed their acquisition of atNorth in September 2026.

Baxtel tracks 97 data center facilities in Sweden totalling 979MW. Microsoft Azure leads the market with 13 sites and Amazon AWS has nine, and the largest single facility is Meta's Luleå 1 at 36MW.

The companies aim to sign a heat purchase agreement in 2027, after which they expect to make a final investment decision.
