Cryptomining firm-turned HPC data center provider Riot Platforms has signed an expanded agreement with chip designer AMD. As part of its Q1 2026 earnings report, Riot said AMD has exercised its option to lease an additional 25MW of capacity, bringing its total contracted footprint with the company to 50MW of critical IT load.
“The first quarter of 2026 marks a definitive inflection point for Riot, as we officially transitioned into an active, revenue-generating data center operator,” said Jason Les, CEO of Riot. “Our ongoing delivery of initial capacity to AMD, and their decision to already double their footprint with a 25MW expansion, validates our ability to execute at institutional scale with the most demanding tenants.
"With 50MW now firmly contracted with AMD, we are rapidly executing on the value creation opportunity presented by our significant, fully-approved power portfolio. We have the secured power, the in-house development expertise, and the significant financial resources required to capitalize on strong market demand with high-quality tenants in order to drive compounding shareholder value.”
Riot announced its pivot toward HPC data centers in January, securing AMD as a key customer. The chipmaker is leasing capacity at Riot’s campus in Rockdale, Texas. The original January agreement with AMD included the potential to scale up to 200MW of critical IT load at the Rockdale campus. This comprised an option for an additional 75MW—of which 50MW has now been exercised—as well as a right of first refusal on a further 100MW.
