Microsoft has announced plans for a massive, multibillion-dollar data center campus in Pecos, West Texas, designed to meet the skyrocketing demands of advanced AI and cloud compute.
To fuel the site, Microsoft secured a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with energy giant Chevron (partnered with hedge fund Engine No. 1), which will supply up to 2.67GW of behind-the-meter power via a natural gas-fired facility known as Project Kirby. Scheduled to achieve first power delivery in 2028, the project will rely on advanced GE Vernova and Solar Turbines infrastructure and utilize non-potable, brackish groundwater for its operations.
This massive project is expected to create around 6,000 construction jobs at full buildout over the next five to seven years, while generating over $10 billion in local and state tax revenue.
