Australian real estate development company Hickory has begun construction on its first data center in Melbourne. The company first revealed plans for the data center in June. The facility will be located on a 3.5-hectare site in Truganina, West Melbourne. The data center was to have 269,000 square feet (25,000 square meters) of floor space and 36MW of capacity across 12 data halls. However, according to Tech Capital, the company will now be developing a 72MW hyperscale data center consisting of two 36MW buildings.

Hickory acquired the Truganina site earlier this year. The facility is also scheduled to be in operation by Q4 2022. CEO of Hickory Data Centres, Joel O’Halloran, said the company is excited to break ground on its Truganina site. He added that the development sees Hickory’s goal of strategic expansion come to fruition. In other news, reports have it that Hickory has also acquired a 258,300 square feet (24,000 square meters) site in Canberra to develop a 28MW hyperscale data center.
