Mātai is the Government Communications Security Bureau's all-of-government secure data centre, located within the RNZAF Base Auckland perimeter in Whenuapai, West Auckland, and built in partnership with the New Zealand Defence Force. Construction began in September 2022, and the facility was officially opened in mid-2025 by the Minister Responsible for the GCSB, Judith Collins. The name Mātai was gifted by mana whenua Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara, drawn from the ancestral Pā site Rangi Mātai at Ōtakanini in South Kaipara. GCSB operates the centre as the government's lead information security agency, storing sensitive information from a range of public-sector agencies, and has described the project as a sovereign alternative to hosting such data in foreign-owned or cloud-based facilities.
