Luleå is a small coastal town just south of the Arctic Circle, and it's surrounded by dense forests and icy rivers. The facility opened in 2013 and was Facebook's first data center outside the U.S.
It consists of three data centers spanning a total of 1.0 million square feet. Meta has invested $835 million (DKK 13 billion) in the campus over a period of 11 years. In terms of resource consumption, the Luleå data centers consume 267,471 MWh of electricity annually and withdraw 6.7 million gallons (25.4 million liters) of water per year. Because of its location, close to the Arctic Circle, the Lulea Data Center is powered almost entirely by existing hydropower.
2013: Facebooked opened it's first facility
2014: Facebook opened a 2nd facility
2018: Announced an expansion that would double the size of the campus. The 3rd building would be nearly 50,000 square meters and would be launched in early 2021
