CSC: Kajaani Data Center

CSC is a non-profit limited liability company with a special mission. The Finnish state owns 70% of its shares and Finnish higher education institutions own 30%, and the Ministry of Education and Culture steers the ownership. CSC is headquartered in Espoo, and Kimmo Koski has been its managing director since 2004.

CSC provides high-performance, cloud, quantum and AI computing, research data management, digital preservation and Funet, the Finnish research and education network. Its Kajaani data centre sits in the Renforsin Ranta business area, a former paper mill site, and hosts the EuroHPC LUMI supercomputer and the national Roihu supercomputer. CSC is building a new data centre on the same site for the LUMI AI Factory.

CSC History:

• In January 2026, construction started on the LUMI AI Factory data centre at Renforsin Ranta in Kajaani.
• In November 2025, CSC signed a lease with Kansallisholding for a new data centre building in Kajaani.
• In December 2024, the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking selected the Finnish-led LUMI consortium to set up an AI Factory in Kajaani, with CSC as host.
• In June 2022, the LUMI supercomputer was inaugurated at CSC's Kajaani data centre.
• In 2016, the state transferred 30% of CSC's shares to Finnish higher education institutions.
• In 2012, CSC opened its data centre in Kajaani.
• In 2008, the company took the name CSC - Tieteen tietotekniikan keskus Oy (CSC - IT Center for Science Ltd).
• In 1993, the unit was incorporated as CSC - Tieteellinen laskenta Oy.
• In 1988, CSC connected Finland to the internet through Funet.
• Founded in 1971 as a support unit within the State Computer Centre (VTKK).
