VodafoneZiggo has announced a new project to supply the new Tilburg district heating scheme with residual heat from its nearby data center.

The company is partnering with real estate developer SDK Vastgoed to establish the sustainable energy system in the new residential area of Smariuskade in Tilburg, Netherlands. Promoting circular economy principles, the data center will then be cooled with  “the soil of the district.’ That said, as of yet, there are few details about the data center's specifications.

It has been shared that work on the new district will begin in late 2023/early 2024.

Speaking about the project, Leo-Geert van den Berg, director of fixed networks at VodafoneZiggo, said: "By working together, we use energy more efficiently and we also provide a quiet living environment, because the cooling fans on the roof of the data center no longer have to be switched on."

Meanwhile Mark Janssens, MT member SDK Vastgoed, said: “When developing an area, we strive to create space for carefree living, with an eye for the future generation. Through this collaboration with VodafoneZiggo for the new Smariuskade district, we are taking responsibility in this.”

Commenting on the company's involvement, Jeroen Hoencamp, CEO of VodafoneZiggo, said that as a telecom company, it takes responsibility with "strong ambitions" to support the energy transition and to make the company and its chain partners more sustainable. "The collaboration with SDK Vastgoed is a concrete example of this," Hoencamp said.

"Our first Integrated Report was published this week, in which we show, among other things, the steps we are taking towards the sustainability ambition of reducing our CO2 emissions by 50% by 2025,” Hoencamp added.
