Vapor IO: Vapor IO Will Install AWS Outposts at Barcelona's Cellnex Tower Site

Mar 02, 2023 | Posted by Abdul-Rahman Oladimeji

Edge company Vapor IO will install AWS's on-premise Outpost gear at Cellnex tower locations in Europe. In June 2021, Vapor released its Kinetic Grid Edge product in the United States in collaboration with network provider Zayo. After that, it was launched in 32 US markets and is currently accessible in 36. The company revealed ambitions to expand into Europe through a collaboration with the Spanish telecommunications operator Cellnex Telecom last month. The initial deployment will feature an Amazon Outpost at a Cellnex location in Barcelona, Spain.

The Kinetic platform, located in a tiny data center container, promises to enable applications near users and data sources, making dispersed Edge applications quicker and more reliable while lowering the traffic to the network's core. Using VMware's Telco Cloud architecture, the platform provides a multi-cloud grid. The system favors applications with low latency requirements and adjusts to infrastructure faults at the local level. Launched for the first time in November 2018, Amazon Outposts is an on-premise Edge computing solution that enables the execution of AWS services locally. The hardware is offered as 1U and 2U appliances, as racks of up to 42U, and as multiple rack deployments. Vapor has already implemented its platform in Las Vegas, Nevada, via Outposts.

The dimensions of the Vapor container or the Outpost deployment, as well as the location of the Barcelona site, were not disclosed. According to Vapor, bringing AWS Outposts to Cellnex facilities would facilitate the delivery of new, monetizable services by enabling local processing. The Vapor announcement included a map of anticipated future deployments around Europe, including key cities in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Poland, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany, Portugal, and Sweden.
