Amazon AWS: Vodafone extends its European Edge presence to Spain using AWS

In collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Vodafone Business has implemented Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) in Spain. After launching the service in Germany and the United Kingdom two years prior, introducing the pilot service in Spain expanded its European footprint. Spain is the most recent market in which Vodafone has integrated AWS Wavelength at the Edge of its 4G and 5G networks.

Customers in the province of Andalusia, including the cities of Malaga, Granada, Córdoba, Jaén, Almera, and parts of Seville, can now access the pilot AWS Wavelength Zone thanks to a partnership between Vodafone and AWS. In addition to extant locations in London, Manchester, Berlin, Munich, and Dortmund, these new locations are in Manchester, Berlin, Munich, and Dortmund.

As the technology transfers cloud-based IT services to the network's edge and eliminates the latency that would otherwise result from multiple hops between aggregation sites and across the Internet, MEC is viewed as a crucial instrument for realizing the full potential of 5G. It is regarded as crucial for Internet of Things (IoT) applications and services such as remote surgery, connected industrial robotics, and autonomous vehicles.

Vodafone notes that it has tested road safety applications based on its Safer Transport for Europe Platform (STEP) using distributed MEC operating on AWS Wavelength in Spain. STEP can connect vehicles directly with transport authorities and each other, enabling real-time sharing of safety information, hazard alerts, and traffic updates.
