Teraco, a South African data center provider, has started constructing a second building at its Bredell campus in the Ekurhuleni neighborhood of Johannesburg. The JB4 facility provides highly resilient and secure colocation facilities, and at its completion, it will encompass 861,110 square feet of building structure supported by 80MW of utility power supply serving 50MW of critical power load.
In November 2020, the company broke ground on the campus. The initial phase of JB4 consists of 322,920 square feet of building structure, 86,110 square feet of data hall space distributed across eight halls, and 19 megawatts of critical power demand. Teraco announced at the first phase's launch the previous year that it had secured adjacent land and power for Phase 2 expansion, increasing the site's size to 645,830 square feet and 50 megawatts (MW).
Teraco, founded in 2008, maintains seven additional facilities in South Africa across Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, totaling 75 MW and serving over 600 customers. In January 2022, Digital Realty acquired a majority stake in Teraco in a transaction valued at approximately $3.5 billion. Teraco currently maintains four data centers and a teleport across four campuses in Johannesburg. JB5, a 30MW facility, is being built at the company's Isando Campus in Ekurhuleni, where JB1 and JB3 are situated. The completion of the new hyperscale data center facility is anticipated in 2024.
