Teraco announces solar farm investment plans

Mar 20, 2023 | Posted by MadalineDunn

Teraco has announced plans to invest in a solar farm located in the City of Ekurhuleni in eastern Johannesburg, South Africa. This investment is in 100MW utility-scale solar farms, which are currently under development and located with the data center, which is reportedly close to signing a wheeling agreement with Eskom. This is one of two farms, which are pegged to generate an estimated 500,000 MWh per year, when up and running.

Funding has reportedly been made possible in part by a recent $678 million loan secured from South Africa-based lender Absa Group.

Teraco CEO Jan Hnizdo recently told Gadget that the move is a “significant step” towards empowering the company to meet both its renewable energy ambitions and those of its clients, adding: “It is also an incredible opportunity for other energy-intensive users in Ekurhuleni to meet their near-term renewable energy goals while positioning themselves as manufacturers of green energy-produced goods. And it will also assist in lowering the overall cost of energy supply to industry.”
