Vietnamese telecoms firm VNG is set to acquire ST Telemedia Global Data Centres’ (STT GDC) 65 percent stake in a planned data center project in Ho Chi Minh City. VNG will pay VND480 billion ($18.3m) for full control of VTH Software Development, which owns the 25,465 sqm (274,100 sq ft) site planned for the facility. The companies partnered on the project in 2024, planning a 60MW data center known as STT VNG Ho Chi Minh City 2. The facility was originally scheduled to go live in H1 2026.
"The transaction relates only to VTH and the associated land parcel and is a site-specific portfolio decision. It does not involve STT GDC’s existing data centre operations in Vietnam and has no impact on its current services or customer commitments.
"STT GDC remains committed to growing its business in Vietnam. This site-specific decision does not change STT GDC’s commitment to pursuing growth opportunities in Vietnam."
The 2.5-hectare site is in the Tan Thuan Export Processing Zone and is leased by VTH until September 2041. STT GDC said the project no longer fits its investment strategy, with the remaining lease term considered unsuitable for a hyperscale data center. VNG plans to explore other uses for the site, including offices, recreational facilities, and an e-sports center.
The companies continue to operate the 9.6MW STT VNG Ho Chi Minh City 1 data center in Tan Thuan.
