SpaceXAI is adding two data center campuses in Southaven, Mississippi, to its Colossus 2 complex, facilities chief executive Elon Musk said will host about 420,000 Nvidia GB300 GPUs and be operating by the end of the year. Musk announced the sites, named Gun Range and Spam after their former occupants, i

The two new sites
Gun Range occupies a 55.9-acre parcel that once held a police and fire training center, and will hold two single-story buildings, according to details from SpaceX's IPO filing cited by DCD. Musk said the site will run roughly 220,000 GB300 chips configured for AI training, the same role as the existing Macroharder and Minihard clusters. Spam is a 53-acre single-story warehouse that previously stored Hormel products. Its roughly 200,000 chips will be configured for inference, which Musk said needs simpler networking and less than half the fiber of a training build.
"Gun Range is tracking to be operational by end of November and Spam in December," Musk wrote on X.
The race to 1.2 million GPUs
The new campuses join three Colossus 2 sites already in buildout. Macrohard, Macroharder and Minihard are planned for 330,000, 220,000 and 220,000 GPUs respectively, DCD reported, and Musk said the complex will total about 1.2 million Blackwell GPUs by the end of 2026. That matches his September statement to Bloomberg that Colossus 2 could more than double its chip count by year-end. Baxtel tracks the company under its former name, xAI: xAI: Macrohard in Memphis, xAI: Minihard on the state line, and xAI: MACROHARDRR in Southaven, an 810,000-square-foot warehouse conversion where Baxtel power records show 100 MW operational and roughly 295 MW under construction.
Permits still lag construction
The expansion lands while the campus fights on several regulatory fronts. On Oct. 30 a federal judge denied the company's motion to dismiss the NAACP's Clean Air Act lawsuit over gas turbines at its Stanton Road power plant, after the same court refused a Justice Department attempt to end the case. The NAACP alleges the company is operating 57 unpermitted turbines at the site, DCD reported; Mississippi's permit board approved 41 permanent replacement turbines in March. State environmental regulators separately put claimed stormwater exposure at the Southaven sites at about $6.1 million, and contractors have filed more than $220 million in liens in DeSoto County, the local news site reported. Across the state line, Memphis councilors last month rejected an 18-month data center moratorium in favor of a 135-day pause on new applications.
Baxtel counts 48 data center facilities in Mississippi, a market led by Amazon AWS with 26 sites. xAI has two. The company, acquired by SpaceX and now operating as SpaceXAI, has also signed compute capacity agreements with Anthropic, Google and Reflection.
Why it matters
Colossus 2 is the first AI complex to split training and inference into dedicated campuses at this scale. If inference builds really need less than half the fiber and simpler networking, the cost of serving models begins to separate from the cost of training them, and that changes how operators design the next wave of AI sites. Both new campuses are scheduled to be live within weeks of their announcement.
The second pattern is speed against process. A complex adding 420,000 GPUs on an eight-week timeline still has unresolved air permits and a live Clean Air Act suit. Neither fight has moved a single date Musk announced.
