The South Korean government has revealed it will develop two data centers using domestically manufactured artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors. Further to this, it will also increase funding for the development of semiconductor products by fabless firms; this is in addition to the $642 million it has committed to generative AI chips this year.
The two facilities will be located in Gwangju and Gyeonggi Province's Pangyo, which are regions known as tech hubs. They will be used to support the growth of emerging industries, including hydrogen power, self-driving cars, and EV batteries.
This development is reportedly aimed at expanding South Korean firms' presence in the global AI chip market.
"We intend to take proactive measures to eliminate regulations that impede investment, reduce barriers for emerging industries and enhance the investment environment for businesses," commented Finance Minister Choo Kyung-ho during a meeting with ministers.
Further details regarding data center specifications have not yet been shared.
