GoDaddy has closed 29 enterprise data centers since 2019 to streamline its data center footprint. The company said it consolidated its presence to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions. GoDaddy pledged to cut Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% by 2022 from a 2019 baseline. Data centers drove GoDaddy's Scope 1 and 2 emissions, according to the 2022 ESG Report. They reduced their data center workloads' energy usage and footprint to mitigate these concerns.
The corporation increased workload density, migrated nine data center workloads to larger facilities, and left 29 enterprise or colocation facilities. GoDaddy stated its existing data center footprint includes a GoDaddy-owned and maintained data center in Phoenix, Arizona, with 320,000 sq ft of IT space and overseas data centers where the business leases the facility shell and runs all the interior technology. They are situated in France, Germany, and the UK, respectively. AWS has hosted most of its offerings since 2018.
The ESG study states that European data centers have used 100% renewable energy from assurances of origin since 2019. Groundwater cooling cuts energy use "significantly" at the French data center. The company's SEC report also mentions colocation data centers "located throughout the US, most significantly in Virginia," as well as in the Netherlands and Singapore. The business said those facilities' leases end in 2033.
