OVHcloud has announced opening of a new facility on the Strasbourg site ravaged by fire in 2021. The new data center named SBG5 cost the company €30 million ($30.5m). SBG5 data center is equipped with an automatic fire extinguishing system. Although this system is standard among modern data centers, it was not equipped in the facilities destroyed by fire last year.
The data center opening ceremony comes 18 months after the disastrous fire. The company announced plans to develop 15 new facilities before the end of 2024. Canada, Germany, Singapore, India, and France and the countries touted for the new developments. The company noted that the new SBG5 data center is designed with hyper-resilience. Masonry walls would separate the rooms in the data center. These walls are designed to resist raging fire for up to two hours.
The CEO of OVHcloud, Michael Paulin, said: "The opening of SBG5 is a strong symbol of this industrial strategy, which allows us to champion the European values of an open, trusted, and sustainable cloud, and this, to our customers around the world. Our local anchorage and our constant investment in the territories allow us to strengthen our position in the employment areas to bring in new skills."
