According to reports, in the wake of the Dublin data center moratorium over grid issues, 21 new data centers are planned outside of the greater Dublin area. Sixteen of these facilities are large-scale data centers, while a further five smaller-scale data center projects are being discussed with ESB Networks.
Business Post, the first publication to break the story, outlined that most of the applications in the region are targeting locations that are roughly 80km away at sites in Louth, Meath, Kildare, Kilkenny, and Wicklow.
Problems around grid capacity are an ongoing issue, and one that is likely to continue as applications for more data centers keep coming. Those within the industry also predict that further energy regulation is inevitable, especially considering that the sector has come under increased scrutiny, with High Court legal cases and continued protests from environmental groups.
