Microsoft has filed plans to expand its data center footprint in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, with a proposed 490-acre campus adjacent to its existing AVC17 facility. The project would add three data center buildings, an electrical substation, and supporting infrastructure to help meet growing demand for cloud services.
It added: "The project is located within the southern Virginia region Regional Network Group (RNG), where existing data centers are outgrowing design capacity much faster than originally anticipated. These capacity issues are related to the push for greater teleworking capacities and cloud-based storage. Because of construction timelines, the applicant is planning now for existing capacity demand and future growth to meet customer and community needs. Datacenter design for this project is advanced and is expected to provide optimal operational efficiencies."
Microsoft plans to build the new campus in two phases, with development expected to take four to five years. The company has not disclosed the size or capacity of the planned facilities.
Mecklenburg County already hosts several Microsoft data centers as part of the company's Southern Virginia Regional Network Group. Between 2022 and 2023, Microsoft filed plans for three additional campuses in the area, including sites north of Butler Farm Road, on Tunstall Road, and within Lakeside Commerce Park.
Microsoft also operates a long-established data center campus in Boydton, Mecklenburg County. First announced in 2010, the facility represented a nearly $500 million investment and was then considered the largest economic development project in Southern Virginia's history. The campus underwent multiple expansions between 2011 and 2016.
The company currently operates two Azure cloud regions in Virginia—East US and East US 2—alongside two government-focused regions, US DoD East and US Gov Virginia.
