Meta has broken ground on its first data center in Oklahoma, beginning construction on a campus in Tulsa. The project is expected to involve around $1 billion in investment, with the company confirming it is behind the 340-acre Project Anthem development, according to News On 6. First proposed in March 2024, the project’s end user had not previously been disclosed. The site is located at the intersection of 11th Street and the west side of the Creek Turnpike.

When the project was first proposed, it was expected to involve around $800 million in investment, with construction estimated to take three years. It is now slated for completion in 2028. According to Meta, the facility will be optimized for AI workloads and will become the company’s 28th data center in the US and its 32nd globally.

The company estimates that peak construction will require more than 1,000 workers, while the completed facility will create around 100 permanent operational jobs. Meta also plans to invest $5 million in local infrastructure improvements.

The data center will use a closed-loop liquid cooling system and is designed to operate with minimal water use for most of the year. Meta will also cover the full cost of water and wastewater services associated with the site. In addition, the company will pay all energy costs and expects to spend “hundreds of millions of dollars on grid infrastructure, like substations and transmission lines,” while matching the facility’s electricity use with 100% clean energy.
