IonQ, a quantum computing company based in the United States, intends to deploy two of its facilities in Switzerland and establish a quantum data center in Europe. This week, the company disclosed its collaboration with QuantumBasel to deploy two quantum computers at QuantumBasel's Center of Competence for Quantum & AI, which is on a technology campus outside of Basel.
The transaction is anticipated to result in two systems, one capable of 35 algorithmic qubits (AQ) and the other capable of 64 AQ. Neither the parameters of the new data center nor the deployment schedule were disclosed. These will be the first quantum computers delivered by the company to Europe. IonQ's systems currently reside in its US data center in Maryland, with the organization planning to open another data center in Seattle, Washington. Access to the company's extant systems is available via the company's web portal or through several cloud service providers.
UptownBasel plans to build a 753,475 sq ft technology campus for Industry 4.0 in Arlesheim close to Basel. The Schorenareal complex was formerly a manufacturing facility for the engineering companies BBC and ABB. The center is supported by Dr. Thomas Staehelin and Monique Staehelin's family. UptownBasel Infinity, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the UptownBasel Group, operates the Center of Competence for Quantum and Artificial Intelligence known as QuantumBasel. Tenants of the campus, including corporations, research institutions, entrepreneurs, and universities, will have access to the two quantum systems via QuantumBasel. IonQ will also serve its European consumers from the colocation facility.
