Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH) has paired with Chinese vendor ZTE to bolster 4G coverage across remote areas of rural Indonesia. In an announcement last week, the carrier said that it has worked with ZTE to deploy more than 550 ultra-capacity backbone microwave links across Indonesia, which it said covers nearly 80 percent of major cities and remote islands.

“We believe this successful collaboration will breathe fresh life into Indonesia's digital transformation journey," said Kevin Chen, sales director of PT. ZTE Indonesia. "ZTE is committed to seizing strategic opportunities in digitalization, intelligence, and low-carbon development. ZTE Microwave Backbone connects ZTE, IOH, and Indonesian residents together, will explore more new possibilities in communication ways, contributing to the digital economic growth of Indonesia and the global community.”

Indosat said it will continue working with ZTE to expand its coverage even further across the country, which is made up of around 17,500 islands, of which around a third (6,000) are inhabited.
